Montessori preschools can be wonderful places for children with special needs such as sensory integration or language-based issues. The appropriateness of any particular school, however, will depend on several factors including the degree of impairment and the nature of the disability. At Barat, we are happy to work with families of children with special needs to assess the appropriateness of our school, make accommodations and offer support.

Unfortunately, there is no way to limit the use of the term “Montessori.” It is not a legally protected term. Furthermore, there is no governing association that oversees all Montessori schools. When searching for a school, it is therefore important to have a basic understanding of Montessori principles.

Visit prospective schools and observe the classrooms. Ask the teachers to explain the materials and what a typical day looks like. Ask to what degree, if any, the school diverges from “traditional” Montessori practices. If so, why?
